About Henan University

Henan University is a national “Double First-Class” construction university with a long history, comprehensive disciplines, distinctive majors, and profound cultural heritage.

Founded in 1912 as the Henan Preparatory School for Studying in Europe and America, its first president was Mr. Lin Boxiang. The campus was established on the site of the former Henan Gongyuan (Imperial Examination Hall). The university underwent several phases including Zhongzhou University, National Kaifeng Sun Yat-sen University (also known as the National Fifth Sun Yat-sen University), and Provincial Henan University. In 1942, it was elevated to National Henan University. After the 1952 adjustment of departments, some faculties either became independent institutions or merged into sister universities, and the main campus was renamed Henan Normal College. It subsequently went through stages as Kaifeng Normal College and Henan Normal University, before restoring the name Henan University in 1984. In October 2008, the university entered the ranks of provincial-ministerial co-constructed universities. In September 2017, it was selected as one of the first batch of national “Double First-Class” construction universities, and was reselected in February 2022. 

Over the past 113 years, the university has adhered to the motto “Clarify Virtue, Renew the People, and Pursue Supreme Goodness,” cultivating a school spirit of “unity, diligence, rigor, and simplicity,” with the core university spirit of “indomitable perseverance and continuous self-improvement.” It has nurtured more than 700,000 talents of various types and made outstanding contributions to educational revitalization, scientific and technological innovation, cultural inheritance, social progress, and human civilization.
